📘 from Chapter III.1 of my book: Generative AI: Understanding the Technology and Its Implications

Platforms define the eras of technology. Each step (e.g., mainframe, PC, internet, smartphone, and cloud) has rewritten the rules of business, creativity, and daily life. And now, we stand on the cusp of the next great leap: generative AI.

When platforms shift, so does the entire tech ecosystem. The smartest minds, boldest startups, and most ambitious corporations race to build on the new foundation. Generative AI isn’t just another step; it’s a reimagining of what technology can do. To earn the “platform” title, economics must meet capabilities, and Generative AI delivers both.

Its impact spans four key areas:

1. Productivity: Generative AI redefines workflows. Routine tasks are automated, complex analysis becomes instant, and decision-making is turbocharged. Work doesn’t just get faster, it gets smarter.

2. Creativity: Generative AI is a partner in creation: of photos, videos, etc. It amplifies human imagination, enabling everyone to produce at a scale and quality that once seemed impossible.

3. Companionship: AI isn’t just a tool, it’s a presence. It listens, engages, and evolves, offering support in ways that feel human. Companionship is no longer limited to people; it’s now part of the platform’s promise.

4. Robotics: Physical and digital worlds converge. Generative AI powers machines that learn, adapt, and respond, making robotics more intuitive and capable than ever. (see how Nvidia or Tesla are developing solutions in this space)

But here’s the catch: every platform shift disrupts more than it creates, at first. Businesses must reimagine their strategies, industries must redefine value, and individuals must rethink skills. This is where the winners emerge: those who adapt quickly, leverage the platform’s potential and ride the curve before it flattens.

Generative AI is not just the next step in tech. It’s the step that changes how we work, create, connect, and build the future.
